Upcoming Changes to your Login Experience

Students, faculty, and staff,

Sonoma State University is transitioning from our custom-built single sign-on (SSO) system to a common Microsoft Entra ID sign-in experience. This change modernizes our authentication platform by moving us onto a secure, widely supported service that is continuously updated and improved, instead of relying on a legacy custom system that we can no longer sustainably maintain. The new Entra ID login provides a more consistent, familiar sign-in experience for students, faculty, and staff, and it strengthens account protection with Microsoft’s built-in security features and monitoring.

Beyond modernization, this shift delivers practical benefits users will notice. Self-service password reset will become simpler and more reliable, reducing downtime and support tickets. Over time, Entra ID also positions SSU for stronger, more convenient sign-ins such as passwordless authentication (for example, using an authenticator app or security key), as well as improved multi-factor authentication options and user-aware access controls as a benefit of the wider Entra ID platform rollout we have been working on for the past year. In short, this migration improves security, improves the user experience, and gives SSU a foundation we can grow with, without the user challenges associated with a system that’s past its era.

As a result, the SSU Online Services sign-in screen will change between January 16 and January 23. You will be required to enter your full SSU email address ([email protected]) when signing in. Your password and DUO account will remain unchanged. The attached image highlights the differences you will notice.

Note: this does not mean we are imminently moving from Gmail to Outlook/M365 as such a technology shift will require substantial consultation with students, faculty, and staff.

We appreciate your patience and understanding with this change and hope you all have had a great holiday break!
