The Project Management Process outlines the different phases of the life cycle of a project in IT, as well as the best practices that can help manage every phase successfully.

Project Request

For a project to be prioritized and reviewed for approval, a project request needs to be submitted.

 

Purpose

Submit a project to be reviewed and if approved allocate resources to start the work.

Initiate

In the initiate phase, the project work officially starts and the project sponsor allocates resources including the Project Lead.

Purpose

Define the technical scope and develop the project charter.

Plan

In the plan phase, the project lead in conjunction with the project team defines the course of action to achieve the scope of the project.

Purpose

Specify the project requirements and develop the project plans.

Execute & Control

In the Execute and Control phase, the project team implements the plans to complete the work and track and review the progress.

Purpose

Do the work as planned and track/manage progress, changes, and risks.

  • * Go-Live Sign Off / Final Project Acceptance

Close

In the Close phase, the project lead formally completes and closes the project.

Purpose

Confirm acceptance of the project's product or service, release project resources, and officially transition into operations.

Operate and Maintain

In the Operate and Maintain phase, the project lead formally completes or closes the project.
